"I attended Selkirk from kindergarten to graduation, and the effect the Montessori upbringing has had on my high school and university experience has been enormous. Montessori teaches children to be independent, to motivate themselves to work ahead and excel – things many people struggle with profoundly into their adult years, but I had under my belt at age thirteen. When I entered high school, the transition was smooth and easy because I’d had so much help developing those skills throughout my young life. Montessori helped me learn how to think outside the box, to understand myself: what inspires me, how I work best, and how to interact with people in the most gratifying and beneficial way possible. Selkirk is such a caring community, too: whenever I come back to visit, the teachers all remember who I am, give me hugs, and are genuinely interested in what I’m doing with my life. I can’t thank the staff enough for all the emotional support I’ve received from them throughout the years; it’s truly helped me try to be my best and love myself for who I am."
