Language Classes and Club Activities

French

From preschool to grade 8, students take French language studies with teachers Petro Palaroan and Elizabeth Champagne. All programs feature the four language learning skills: listening, speaking, reading and writing. Second language learning is intended to broaden the student’s mind through exposure to another culture and to a different way of viewing our world as expressed through language.
Preschool/Kindergarten French programs feature the Accelerative Integrated Method (AIM).  The grades 1 to 8 French programs are activity-based, student centred programs that are intended to foster a positive attitude towards learning French.  The programs consist of Image 1 & 2 for the grades 1 to 2, Visage 1, 2, 3 for grades 3 to 5 and Passage 1, 2, 3 for  grades 6 to 8.  Each program provides a foundation of skills that continues to grow throughout the student’s Montessori education.

The program objectives are:
  • to deliver a variety of strategies that will enable students to comprehend spoken and
  • written French;
  • to enable students to complete projects involving communication in French;
  • to stimulate insights into English and French cultural similarities and differences as
  • reflected in the languages;
  • to increase the student’s general knowledge by using French as a means for learning
  • across the curriculum; and
  • to develop in our students a positive attitude and acceptance of languages and cultures.

We aim to nurture these objectives by providing a solid foundation on which students will build throughout life.

 Clubs

We strive to provide a wide variety of opportunities for children to work, learn and play outside of the regular school day.  Before and after-school activities are an important part of our program at Selkirk Montessori School.

Japanese Club

Our Japanese club is open to students starting in grade 3.  We have beginner, intermediate and advanced groups attending classes before and after school.  They learn vocabulary and language structure, Hiragana, Katakana and Kanji characters and play traditional Japanese games such as Karuta, Kendama, Itedama, Daruma, Otoshi and – of course – Origami.  They learn about the culture and seasonal celebrations in Japan, are able to do some basic food preparation and have enjoyed Onigiri (rice ball) with Nori (seaweed).

Spanish Club

We are pleased to offer Spanish as one of our extra-curricular language options at Selkirk Montessori School.  Small groups of kindergarten/preschool and elementary/middle school students take part in an after-school program incorporating art, songs and activities – all in Spanish. Children as young as three years old are welcome to attend, but must be accompanied by an adult.

Club Activities

We offer a variety of before and after school clubs at Selkirk Montessori School.  They may range from cross-country running, basketball, badminton, dance, and sports clubs to art, chess, cooking, knitting and stamp clubs. Activities are organized and supervised by volunteer parents and/or staff.
