November 2011

November 29, 2011 we are having our first of two Lockdown drills this school year. The purpose of the lockdown is to ensure that the students of the school are familiarized with the drill. This is important because if the police were to ask us to go into lockdown because of something occuring in the neighbourhood then all the students will know the steps that need to be done for everyones safety.
If you are in the school during the lockdown please follow the instructions of the staff and join in the nearest classroom  and remain there until the announcement comes on stating that we are finished the drill. If it was not a drill there would be no mention of it being a drill and everyone would go into immediate lockdown. Each room in the school has a sign depicting the safest area of the room. If you would like more information about the drill please email office@selkirkmontessori.ca or drop by and see me.

October 2011

October 20, 2011 at 10:20 am Selkirk Montessori School will be joining in with over 500,000 people in the largest earthquake drill in Canadian history.
You or your work can be a part of this as well. A wonderful opportunity to review the safety measures that everyone should take in the event of an earthquake whether you are at home, work or school. For more information check it out at www.shakeoutbc.ca and join in.

September 2011

The start of another great year here at Selkirk Montessori!    Did you feel it though?   Friday - September 9th, 2011 6.4 magnitude 23 kilometers deep and it was located  138km (85miles) from Campbell river here on Vancouver Island. We didn't feel it at the school, but I do know some people felt it in Seattle and in Vancouver.
Just another reminder to all of us that we do live on a fault line. So please make sure that the school  office has all of your updated information from over the summer time.
If you have some information that you would like to pass along about emergency plans that your family has done to get ready for the Big One please send me an email (office@selkirkmontessori.ca) or drop by and see me and I would be happy to share it with all the families. Or feel free to post a comment below for everyone to read!
As is the same every year the school we will be holding our fire drills, earthquake drills, and our lockdown drills for the safety of everyone in the school.
As I write this today on September 11 the 10 year anniversary of the tragic events of 9/11, I hope that none of us, nor our children or their children ever have to witness an experience like that again. My thoughts go out to all families who were touched by 9/11 through losing family or friends.  I think we will all remember where we were that day.
Enjoy the rest of September and the sunshine as it continues! Coming up in October is the BIG BC Earthquake drill. More news to follow soon!
