Contemporary Montessori

The best of both worlds. Time-tested Montessori methods meet modern educational practice, all in a caring community on Victoria's Selkirk Waterfront.

The secret of good teaching is to regard the child's intelligence as a fertile field...Our aim is so to touch his imagination as to enthuse him to his inmost core...to help him in his growth, mental and emotional as well as physical.

Who We Are

We're a registered nonprofit school offering preschool through Grade 8 education that's both affordable and exceptional. Our students learn at their own pace through guided exploration. Because they're learning from their own experiences, they truly own the knowledge they gain.

Independence, confidence, self-discipline, and a genuine love of learning are qualities that set Montessori students apart. When our students leave Selkirk, they carry a secure foundation for whatever comes next.

What Makes Us Special

  • Full BC curriculum through Grade 8
  • Montessori-trained staff whose credentials exceed provincial standards
  • Low student-teacher ratios so every child is known and supported
  • Outstanding specialist programs including Music and French
  • A beautiful, modern facility: bright, accessible, and earthquake-prepared
  • A vibrant school community where families feel at home

Why "Contemporary" Montessori?

Calling ourselves a Contemporary Montessori school means we're always asking: What's best for our students right now? We stay rooted in Maria Montessori's guiding principles while drawing on the latest research from educators and neuropsychologists alike.

The result? A thoughtful balance of Montessori philosophy and BC Ministry of Education requirements, with graduates who consistently prove it works. Our students become confident, engaged learners who lead in their own areas of passion.

Elements of Our Approach

Prepared Environment - Multi-age classrooms, intentional layouts, and thoughtful design create spaces where children can focus, explore, and grow.

Teachers as Guides - Our educators observe, offer lessons, and follow the child. They provide guidance when needed while nurturing independence and peer leadership.

Hands-On Materials - Discovery-based, concrete-to-abstract learning helps children truly understand concepts, not just memorize them.

Balanced Curriculum - From Practical Life and Sensorial to Math, Language, and Cultural Arts, plus specialists in French, Music, PE, and Technology, we nurture the whole child.
